Voices Of Our Kind-2nd Section by Alan Fleming Baird

This piece was written as a result of a commission from the Scottish Philharmonic Orchestra for their season of Concerts entitled "A Cocktail, A Canope, and a Concert" at the Oranmor Theatre in Glasgow. The remit for the piece was that it had to reflect in some way some connection to Scotland. The last piece I had composed in Scotland before moving to London was a cycle of songs based on Scottish poet Iain Crichton Smith's poems. The songs were never performed but I returned to one of the melodies and used it as the opening meoldy of this piece - that poem gives this piece its title. The piece is in three sections : the first slow and lyrical, the second fast and cotrapuntal, and the third a slow reflection on the opening material. The sound clip above is from the middle section.
